Building Projects: Straws and more

sculptureThe humble drinking straw can be an excellent and inexpensive building material.

With straws and wooden stirrer sticks from your favorite coffee shop, you can make elegant sculptures, as described in Make magazine.

Or, you can purchase plastic connective pieces called Strawbees.

In either case, after students have had the opportunity to explore the materials, it’s time to issue a challenge prompt. Challenge prompts are:

  1. Brief
  2. Ambiguous
  3. Immune to Assessment

For example, ask your students to build the tallest structure they can, the most beautiful, the strongest, etc. Then stand back and watch how creative they can be!
